Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injuries
Tommy John Surgery, UCL Reconstruction and Repair, and New Innovations in the Treatment of Baseball Injuries
Dr. Matthew Fury is a trusted authority in the field of baseball sports medicine and the treatment of UCL injuries. While his primary practice serves athletes in Baton Rouge and Gonzales, Louisiana, his extensive experience and award-winning research have established him as an expert consultant for athletes of all levels, both locally and beyond. His passion for baseball medicine drives him to improve how we train, treat, and rehabilitate overhead athletes.
Major League Baseball Experience
Dr. Fury has unique high-level experience in baseball sports medicine. He completed his fellowship training at Hospital for Special Surgery under the guidance of Dr. David Altchek—world-renowned sports medicine and baseball surgeon. During this time, he participated in the care of countless professional baseball players while learning surgical techniques from one of the pioneers of the Tommy John procedure.
Additionally, he served as an assistant team physician for the New York Mets, and he has been an orthopedic consultant at the MLB Amateur Player Draft Combine. He has also traveled internationally to provide care for baseball players in the Dominican Republic.
Researcher and Innovator
Dr. Fury performs research on UCL injury risk, Tommy John surgery technique and outcomes, and return to performance after surgery. His work has been published in high-impact journals and presented at national and international conferences. He has published on improving UCL surgical technique, and he has pushed the field of sports medicine to focus on what matters to our athletes—returning to performance, not simply getting back to sport. For example, he was the first to publish on pitch spin rates after UCL surgery.
Dr. Fury continues to work tirelessly on improving the health and performance of baseball athletes. He collaborates with surgeons, therapists, and trainers across the world to elevate the standard of care for injured athletes, and he has obtained research funding from Major League Baseball to study possible causes of injury in youth players.
