Matthew S. Fury, MD
Born and raised in Louisiana, Dr. Fury attended Louisiana State University where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering while playing on the LSU Baseball team. He received his Doctor of Medicine at LSU Medical School in New Orleans before completing his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program. During his time at Harvard, he was awarded the Executive Committee Award as well as the Louis Meeks, MD Award for Excellence in Sports Medicine. He was then selected for the prestigious Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery Fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, considered the #1 orthopedic hospital in the world. During his training, he was mentored by many world-renowned leaders in sports medicine and shoulder surgery including the pioneers responsible for the modern Tommy John technique, tendon transfer procedures to restore the function of irreparable rotator cuff tears, shoulder replacement surgery, and ACL reconstruction in young athletes. He served as an Assistant Team Physician for the New York Mets and Brooklyn Cyclones while also participating in the care of athletes from the New York Giants, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, New York Red Bulls, and New York Rangers. At the conclusion of fellowship, he was honored with the Warren R. Kadrmas, MD Award for citizenship and dedication to sports medicine. Dr. Fury is an active researcher whose work has been published and presented at the national and international level, and he continues to perform research in collaboration with Major League Baseball. He serves on the Editorial Board for the Arthroscopy Journal.
As a former collegiate athlete, Dr. Fury understands the psychological and physical demand of pursuing elite athletic performance. He has worked closely with the sports performance staff of the New York Mets where he was exposed to the latest rehabilitation techniques, training philosophies, and sports science to support athletes at the pinnacle of their sport. He is returning home to Louisiana with his family to bring his prior experiences to serve the community that he loves. In his free time, Dr. Fury enjoys playing golf, working out, and spending time with his family.
Our Expertise
Shoulder and Elbow Injuries in the Throwing Athlete
Dr. Fury specializes in performing Tommy John surgery, including augmented UCL reconstructions and UCL repairs with internal brace. He also treats complex conditions of the shoulder including impingement, tendinitis, rotator cuff injury, latissimus injuries, labral tears, and nerve compression syndromes like thoracic outlet syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome. He has performed extensive research in collaboration with Major League Baseball to improve the health and performance of baseball athletes, and he has previously worked with the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox.
Rotator Cuff Tears
In addition to using the latest techniques for rotator cuff repair, Dr. Fury also specializes in complex tendon transfers to restore the function of the rotator cuff when it has previously been deemed irreparable. These procedures may allow young patients to return to activity without the need for shoulder replacement.
Shoulder Instability
Dr. Fury performs arthroscopic stabilization procedures including labral repair, HAGL repair, and remplissage. He also performs bone block reconstruction procedures, including the Latarjet and distal tibial allograft, to restore stability in patients with significant glenoid bone loss.
ACL, Meniscus, and Other Knee Ligament Injuries
Dr. Fury performs ACL reconstruction with patellar, hamstring, and quadriceps tendon grafts, and he attempts to repair the meniscus whenever possible. His training at Boston Children’s Hospital allows him to perform special modifications of these procedures in pediatric patients with open growth plates. Dr. Fury also performs reconstruction and repair procedures for injuries to the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), medial collateral ligament (MCL), and posterolateral corner (PLC)—including treating complex multi-ligament knee injuries.
Shoulder Replacement
Employing the latest techniques and implants, Dr. Fury performs total shoulder replacements and reverse shoulder replacements to return patients with arthritis, irreparable rotator cuff tears, and cuff arthropathy to active levels.
